Student Handbook

Absences and Tardies

The first bell at Timpanogos rings at 8:15, and the second bell at 8:20. Students are tardy if not in their classrooms and ready to begin school by the 8:20 bell. Student absences are acceptable only for illness or unusual and infrequent family emergencies. Please review the district attendance policy which can be found here. Absences exceeding five consecutive days or those that occur frequently need verification from the child’s doctor with a note turned in to the office. If repeated absences occur the matter will be turned over to the district truancy office which will include truancy school and possible referral to Provo Attendance Court. Utah State Law mandates that students must be in school. We ask that parents choose to take their child on vacation during school breaks.

Accidents and Illness

If accidents or illnesses occur, the school will contact the parents or the designated person listed as an emergency contact. The Emergency and Health Information is critical and we ask that you keep the contact information up to date. We also ask that you keep phone numbers up to date. If your phone number changes please call the office and let the secretary know. It is critical that we have current information in case of emergency.

Air Quality

The Air Quality Flag Program alerts organizations to the local air quality forecast and helps them to take actions to protect people’s health, including those with asthma.

Here’s how it works at Timpanogos: Each day our school raises a flag that corresponds to how clean or polluted the air is. The color of the flag matches EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI): green, yellow, orange, red, and purple.

Books and Supplies

Each year students are issued textbooks and other basic supplies. They may also check books out from the school library. Any books lost or damaged by the students beyond normal wear and tear will need to be replaced by the student or his/her parents.

Cell Phones

Our first priority is student safety. To ensure that students do not access or show other students inappropriate material that can be accessed from electronic devices, we have a policy that students are not allowed to use cell phones, tablets, electronic gaming systems, etc., during school hours. This policy is also in place so that students will not be distracted from learning.

We recognize the need of some students to have a phone with them to contact parents on their way to and from school. Students may have these devices with them for that purpose. These devices need to be turned off and stored in their backpack while at school. If a student has their device out at school, it will be taken away from them and will be given back at the end of the day to the student. The second time this happens, the teacher will call the parents and they will need to come and get the device from the teacher. The third time it happens, the device will be given to the Principal and that student will need to have a Parent/Student/Admin conference to review policy and give the device back.

The same rules above apply if a student has a smart watch that allows for calls, except that the student may wear the watch and use it only as a watch during school hours. The student/parent is welcome to use the watch for contact before or after school hours. During school hours, students and parents are asked to use the school phones for any calls. If you have questions, you are welcome contact the office.

Timpanogos is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen electronic devices that are brought to school.

Closed Campus

Timpanogos is a closed campus school. Once students arrive at school, they are not allowed to leave the school and/or school grounds for any reason unless they are checked out in the office by their parents or a parent designee.

Dress Standards

Timpanogos dress and hygiene standards encourage modesty, safety and personal cleanliness. Clothing, jewelry items, body tattooing, piercing, etc. that interfere with or disrupt instruction to a marked degree are not allowed. Students may wear shorts so long as they are at least mid-thigh in length. Short shorts or un-hemmed cutoffs are not allowed. Halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps, belly shirts, and material that can be seen through are not appropriate. Modest sleeveless tops may be worn. Footwear is required for safety purposes. Students are encouraged to wear shoes or sandals that fit securely and protect the feet. Students will not be allowed to participate in physical education activities if they are wearing open shoes, such as sandals or flip-flops. All clothing or accessories that display wording or graphics advertising alcohol or tobacco or that are distracting or offensive will not be allowed. Hats can be worn on the playground but need to be removed before entering the building.

Because of their identification and association with gangs, the following are not permitted according to district policy: bandannas, chains hanging from pockets, headgear or any article of clothing or jewelry bearing gang symbols, names, initials, insignia or anything else which signals gang affiliation.

Fees

Students in kindergarten through sixth grade shall not be charged fees. However, donations will be accepted toward supplies, assemblies, field trips, or other activities. No child will be penalized for not making a donation.

Field Trips

Classes find opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom by going on field trips. Your child’s teacher will send home information regarding each field trip along with a permission slip. Parent volunteers are often asked to help supervise during trips. We appreciate your help, but would ask that younger children not come along. Pending special circumstances, school lunch will be expected to be purchased for field trips to reduce complications in planning and preparing for the field trip.

Gum and Candy and Homemade goods

Gum and/or candy should not be brought to school. Birthday treats should be purchased at the store. Home-baked goods are not allowed, even for class parties and birthdays.

Homework

Homework is an extension of class work. Studies show that it is effective in helping students make greater educational gains. Parents are encouraged to become involved in what their children are doing in school by working with them. Please expect your children to complete homework, as well as provide a quiet place for students to work effectively.

Inside Recess

Students will generally go outside, even on winter days, unless the weather is extreme. We will keep students inside if the temperature reaches below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, the air quality alert has been issued to the school, or if the wind or moisture is extreme. If your child needs to stay in for any other reason, please notify the school.

Medication

School personnel cannot give children medication without a written medication release. Children’s tylenol may be given with the permission from a parent.

Parking and Student Drop Off / Pick Up

We ask parents to please be extra cautious in the parking lot of the school. The north entrance should be used as an entrance and the south should be used as an exit during the hours of 7:30-9:00 am and 2:30-3:30 pm.

The right lane is for drop off/pick up and the left lane is used for passing. If you plan on exiting your car, we ask that you please park in a parking stall and turn off the engine. Please don’t leave unattended cars in either of the lanes at any time.

Please remember that there are small children and be extra cautious of your speed and movement in the parking lot and adjacent streets. During all times please refrain from speeding, mobile phone use, or anything else that will draw your attention from maintaining safety.

Thank you for your cooperation in all these safety measures.

Phone Use

School phones are for school business and emergencies only. Please make arrangements with your child prior to the school about day care, whether to walk home, etc. The phone is available for cases of illness, lunch charges, etc.

Playground Rules – Specific rules regarding the Playground

• Put-downs are not allowed on the playground or in the school building.
• Basketball standards and baseball back stop are not to be climbed on.
• Slides are for sliding down only.
• Jump ropes are only for jumping.
• Pebble gravel and rocks are not to be picked up or thrown.
• Tackle football or other games of a tackling nature are not allowed.
• Throwing snowballs, sliding on ice, or climbing on snow or ice mounds (Bunker’s Hill, etc.) are not allowed.
• Games are played according to rules of good sportsmanship (e.g., games cannot be exclusive).
• Do not leave the playground/field area (fenced area) for any reason without receiving permission.
• Leave hard balls and hazardous play equipment at home. Keep bicycles locked and in the bike racks throughout the school day.
• Practice safety and courtesy in all games and on all playground equipment. Use playground only during assigned periods.
• There should be no climbing on playground structures where it is not designated to do so. Students should never stand atop of any structure or jump from the structures.
• Assume responsibility for all equipment taken from the classroom. Return lost and found equipment to the school office.

Playground Supervision

Playground supervision is not provided after school. Students need to leave the building and the school grounds immediately after school is dismissed. Supervision is provided at the front of the building both before and after school to assist students crossing school driveways. Students are required to cross at school driveways where supervisors are stationed and to do what they can to provide for their own safety and the safety of others. Paid supervision is also provided on the back playground, before school and during lunch recess. Teachers supervise students during class and grade level recess periods.

Report Cards

Student progress reports will be sent home quarterly. You may access current grades through Powergrade, via the district or school website. If you have questions about signing onto this system, please contact the school.

Skateboards, Scooters, Bicycles, Heelies, Roller Blades, and Toys

Skateboards, scooters, bikes, heelies, and roller blades are off limits on school grounds and are not allowed in the building. Before entering the school grounds, students need to remove roller blades or heelys, carry skateboards, and walk their scooters or bikes. All bicycles, scooters, and skateboards brought to school need to be properly stored in one of several bike racks provided by the school, or stored in a backpack. We strongly recommend that students lock up their bikes, scooters and skateboards.

Toys, including trading cards, playing cards and electronic devices are not to be brought to school. They become a distraction to learning and are easily lost or misplaced. Students can bring balls, mitts, and other athletic equipment if they wish to do so. We strongly recommend marking all items. The school is not responsible for any items that are lost, stolen, or damaged.

SEP Conferences

Parent Teacher conferences are held three times each year. The first two weeks of school we hold conferences to set expectations, establish goals and establish communication. During the school year parent teacher conferences are held two more times in the fall and spring to discuss progress and whether or not students are mastering essential standards and skills.

Visitors

All visitors, including parents, are required to check in at the office. If parents will be moving throughout the school or visiting a classroom, they are expected to wear a visitor’s pass until they check out in the main office. Please limit all visits that may interrupt the teacher or students.

Ausencias y tardanzas

La primera campana de Timpanogos suena a las 8:15 y segunda a las 8:20. Los estudiantes se consideran tarde sino están en clase y listos para aprender después de la campana de las 8:20. Las ausencias son aceptadas sólo en caso de enfermedad o emergencias familiares específicas. Lea las políticas de asistencia del distrito en la página provo.edu . Si un estudiante falta más de 5 días por consecutivo o si las faltas son muy frecuentes, se necesitará una excusa escrita médica, la cual debe ser llevada a la oficina. Si las inasistencias son numerosas, el asunto será referido a la oficina de ausentismo escolar del distrito y posiblemente al tribunal de asistencia escolar de Provo. La ley de Utah requiere que todos los niños de edad escolar asistan a la escuela. Les pedimos a los padres que eviten irse de vacaciones durante los días de clase.

Accidentes y enfermedades

En caso de accidente o enfermedad, la escuela llamará a los padres o a la persona de contacto asignada. La información actualizada para emergencias y sobre la salud es muy importante. También le pedimos que le informe a la oficina y a la secretaria al cambiar de número de teléfono. Si se presenta alguna emergencia, es necesario tener la información correcta.

Libros y materiales escolares

Cada año, a todos los estudiantes se les proporciona libros y materiales básicos. Ellos pueden tomar prestado libros de la biblioteca. Si aparte del uso normal del libro, un estudiante daña o pierde uno, los padres tendrán que pagar por el libro.

Teléfono móvil: 

Nuestra primera prioridad es la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes. Para evitar que algún alumno(a) tenga acceso a material inapropiado por medio de aparatos electrónicos y que lo comparta con otros en la escuela; una de las políticas de Timpanogos prohíbe el uso de teléfonos, tabletas, aparatos electrónicos para video juegos, etc. durante las horas de clase. Esta política sirve para evitar la distracción en clase también.

Entendemos que hay estudiantes que usan sus teléfonos para comunicarse con sus padres hacia y desde la escuela. Los alumnos pueden tener teléfonos para ese propósito, pero en la escuela tienen que apagarlos y mantenerlos en sus mochilas. Si algún estudiante tiene el teléfono fuera de la mochila durante las horas de clase, se le quitará  y puede retirarlo después de clase. La segunda vez que suceda esto, el maestro(a) llamará a los padres para que vengan en persona a retirar el aparato en manos del maestro. La tercera vez, el aparato será entregado a la directora y el estudiante tendrá que reunirse con la administración y los padres para hablar sobre la política antes de retirar el aparato electrónico.

La misma política se aplica para relojes con la capacidad de hacer llamadas y mandar mensajes. El estudiante puede tener un reloj, siempre y cuando, sólo lo use para la hora durante la escuela. El estudiante/padres puede usar el reloj como celular antes y después de clase.

Durante las horas de clase los estudiantes y padres deben usar el teléfono de la escuela para comunicarse entre si.

Si tienen cualquier duda, vengan a la oficina. La escuela no se hace responsable por la pérdida o el robo de aparatos electrónicos traídos a clase.

Plantel cerrado

Timpanogos es un plantel cerrado. Al llegar a la escuela, a los estudiantes no se les permitirá su salida del área de la misma, al menos que sean adecuadamente retirados en la oficina por los padres o por alguna persona autorizada.

Código de vestimenta

El código de vestimenta e higiene de Timpanogos promueve la modestia, la seguridad y la higiene personal. Se prohíbe cualquier prenda de vestir, joyas, tatuajes, perforaciones en el cuerpo, etc. que interfieran o interrumpan la enseñanza. Los estudiantes pueden vestirse con pantalones cortos, siempre y cuando, lleguen hasta la mitad del muslo. Los pantalones demasiado cortos o los cortados sin dobladillo no son permitidos. Las camisetas/blusas sin mangas, las de tubo y aquellas que muestran el estómago no son apropiadas, pero las modestas sin mangas son permitidas. Los zapatos son requeridos por el bienestar del niño(a). A los estudiantes se les aconseja que tengan zapatos o sandalias se ajusten a los pies y los protejan. Los alumnos no pueden participar en actividades de educación física en sandalias u otro tipo de zapato abierto. También se prohíbe cualquier tipo de prenda de vestir o joyas que contengan gráficos o palabras con referencia al tabaco y el alcohol, así como también que causen distracción o sean ofensivos. Las gorras/sombreros pueden ser usados en el campo de juego, pero nunca dentro del edificio. Por el riesgo de tener alguna afiliación a pandillas, lo siguiente está prohibido basado en las políticas del distrito: bandanas, cadenas en los pantalones, algún tipo de sombrero, prenda de vestir o joyas que contengan símbolos, nombres, iniciales, insignias o cualquier otra cosa que se relacione con una pandilla.

Cuotas

los estudiantes del kindergarten al sexto grado no tiene que pagar por su educación. Sin embargo, se aceptarán donaciones para material escolar, asambleas, paseos u otro tipo de actividades. No se penalizará a un niño por no donar.

Paseos escolares

Los grados buscan oportunidades para extender su experiencia educativa fuera del aula a través de paseos escolares. El maestro(a) de su hijo(a) les mandará información sobre cada actividad y un permiso para firmar. A veces, se necesitará la ayuda de los padres durante estos paseos. Le agradecemos su asistencia, pero le pedimos que no traiga niños pequeños. De acuerdo con el tipo de paseo, se esperará que compren el almuerzo proveído por la escuela para así simplificar los arreglos para la actividad.

Goma de mascar, golosinas o comida hecha en casa: goma de mascar y/o golosinas no se deben traer a la escuela. Los dulces o golosinas para celebrar cumpleaños deben ser comprados en la tienda. Comida hecha en casa no es permitida para las actividades en clase y los cumpleaños.

Tareas

Las tareas es una extensión del trabajo en clase. Estudios han comprobado que son una manera de ayudar a los estudiantes a progresar. Se le recomienda que se involucre en la educación de sus hijos(as) ayudándoles con las tareas. Hágale saber al estudiante que espera que termine las tareas y ofrézcale un lugar tranquilo donde hacerlas.

Recreo adentro

Generalmente los estudiantes saldrán al recreo en el invierno, menos en caso de mal tiempo. Los alumnos(as) se quedarán dentro de la escuela cuando la temperatura baje de 25 grados Fahrenheit, haya una alerta por contaminación del aire o por excesivo viento o lluvia. Si su hijo(a) tiene quedarse adentro, déjele saber a la escuela.

Medicinas

El personal de la escuela no puede dispensar ninguna medicina al estudiante sin una autorización por escrito. Tylenol puede ser administrado con el consentimiento de los padres.

Estacionamiento, entrada y salida de los estudiantes

Maneje con mucho cuidado en el estacionamiento. La entrada del norte es solo para ingresar y la del sur para salir, de 7:30-9:00 am y de 2:30-3:30 pm. El canal derecho es para retirar

A sus hijos(as) y el izquierdo es para pasar. Si necesita bajarse del auto, tiene que estacionarse en los espacios indicados. No deje su auto mal estacionado en los canales de tránsito en ningún momento. Recuerde que hay niños pequeños cruzando el estacionamiento y las calles vecinas, por lo que tenga precaución y use la velocidad adecuada. En el estacionamiento no maneje rápidamente, no use su teléfono o cualquier otra cosa que le distraiga. Le agradecemos su cooperación.

Uso del teléfono

Los teléfonos de la escuela son para el uso del personal y para emergencias. Es mejor hacer los arreglos sobre su cuidado, cómo se van a casa, etc. con su hijo(a) antes de venir a clase. El teléfono se puede usar en caso de enfermedad, pago de la comida, etc.

Reglas específicas sobre el uso del campo de juegos

• Ridiculizaciones no están permitidas en el campo ni en el edificio.
• Está prohibido subirse en los soportes del baloncesto y en las porterías de futbol.
• Los toboganes son para deslizarse hacia abajo solamente.
• Las cuerdas para saltar son sólo para ese uso.
• No se debe tirar piedras ni rocas.
• El futbol americano o cualquier otro juego que requiera mucho contacto físico no está permitido.
• Está prohibido hacer bolas de nieves y lanzarlas, patinar en el hielo o subir montañas de nieve (juego Bunker’s Hill, etc.)
• Los juegos deben tener un buen espíritu deportivo (juegos que excluyan a otros estudiantes están prohibidos)
• Los niños(as) deben quedarse en el campo de juego; para salir deben ir a la oficina y tener la autorización de la escuela.
• No se debe traer a la escuela pelotas duras o cualquier otro equipo que pueda ser peligroso. Las bicicletas deben estar con llave en el lugar designado durante las horas de clase.
• Los estudiantes deben ser cuidadosos y tener cortesía durante los juegos y en el parque. El uso del equipo de juego debe ser limitado según la hora del día.
• Los estudiantes no deben escalar ningún tipo de equipo que no esté destinado para ello, ni llegar a la parte más alta del equipo y brincar hacia abajo.
• Los estudiantes son responsables del equipo de juego sacado del aula. Cualquier equipo extraviado debe regresarse a la oficina.

Supervisión del parque de juegos

No se ofrece supervisión después de clase. Los estudiantes deben salir de la escuela y su terreno inmediatamente después de terminar las clases. Habrá supervisión en el frente del edificio antes y después de clase para asistir a los estudiantes a cruzar el estacionamiento. Se les requiere atravesar sólo donde hay empleados designados para facilitar un cruce seguro de todos. Durante las horas de recreo, después del almuerzo, se ofrecerá supervisión por parte de empleados. Los maestros supervisarán a los estudiantes durante los recreos de cada grado.

Reporte de calificaciones

Los reportes de progreso serán enviados a casa trimestralmente. Puede tener acceso a las calificaciones a través de Powergrade en el sitio web del distrito o de la escuela. Si tiene alguna duda sobre el acceso al sistema, contacte a la escuela.

Patinetes, patines, patinetas y bicicletas: no se permite dentro de la escuela los patines, las patinetas y las bicicletas. Antes de entrar al terreno de la escuela, los estudiantes deben quitarse los patines, tomar con la mano las patinetas y bajarse de las bicicletas. Las bicicletas deben colocarse en el área designada; les recomendamos que estén con llave.

Juguetes, como tarjetas para intercambiar, tarjetas de juego y aparatos electrónicos no deben traerse a la escuela

Estos juguetes son una distracción en clase y pueden fácilmente perderse. Los niños(as) puede traer bates, guantes, pelotas y otro tipo de equipo deportivo. Es recomendado que le coloque el nombre a objetos personales. La escuela no se hace responsable de esos objetos.

Conferencias SEP

Las conferencias entre padres y maestros se llevan a cabo tres veces al año. Las primeras dos semanas de clase determinaremos expectativas, haremos metas y estableceremos comunicación. Durante el año habrá dos conferencias más, una el otoño y otra en la primavera para hablar sobre el progreso y si el estudiante está dominando el materia presentado y adquiriendo las habilidades necesarias.

Visitantes

Todos los visitantes, incluyendo los padres, tienen que venir a la oficina primero. Si los padres quieren estar dentro de la escuela y visitar una clase, tienen que llevar consigo una identificación hasta que regresen a la oficina. Le pedimos que limiten sus visitas, ya que esto pueden interrumpir la clase.
