Standard:6.g.2 Volume of Cubes & Rectangles

Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with appropriate unit fraction edge lengths by packing it with cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths (e.g., 3½ x 2 x 6) and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas V = lwh and V = Bh to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Clarification: It is not intended that this be modeled physically; it should be a conceptual activity modeled with drawings and diagrams. (Note: This standard is worded differently than the official standard. There are typos and other errors in the official version. They are corrected here and a clarification is included.)

  1. Determine whether to find area, surface area, or volume in a given situation
  2. Find the volume of a rectangular prism by filling it with unit cubes
  3. Find the volume of a rectangular prism by developing a formula
  4. Identify and label three-dimensional figures by locating faces, vertices, edges, and height
  5. Find the volume of a rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths
  6. Find the volume of a fractional rectangular prism: using unit cubes
  7. Find the volume of a rectangular prism: using unit cubes
  8. Find the volume of a 3-dimensional figure composed of 2 rectangular prisms
